Some Thoughts On “Aid Effort Spawns a Backlash in Haiti”

February 22nd, 2012 by admin

Yesterday, I heard the BBC report that the UN needed on the order of $150M immediately to address the Cholera outbreak currently estimated to affect 11,000. I had to rewind my DVR 4 times. You don’t have to run a business to understand that would make one of the most inefficient operations in the world. With a per capita income of $1,300/yr, the UN would be spending >$13,000 per individual affected.

I think there may be some form of codependency between bleeding hearts and Haitians. The Haitians provide the perpetual cause; the liberals get to swoop in as personal saviors. There’s no personal growth or change in the dynamic on either side. Haitians don’t seem to be improving their own abilities for self-determination and self-sufficiency. Liberal hearts never improve the management structure to ensure an efficient and effective operation, so good money and personal finance goes after bad. Rinse and repeat.

I think I’ll donate to needs and causes closer to home.
